Our good buddy (and baby brother of our long-since-gone bassist, Ryan) Brendan Nowlin, interviewed me for Loyola College’s on-campus radio show around 2005. Now, whether or not this aired or if it was for his tryout reel, I have no idea. Either way, he graciously sent the recording over after digging it out from under a pile of dusty mp3s. I thought I would share it to the world. I perform acoustic versions of “Line of Fools,” “A Sudden Burst of Red” and “To Point B” (a different version) in between some questions about the band. I hope you enjoy. Thanks Brendan

Here is the acoustic version of a new song called “The Good Mourning Sun.” We can not wait to finish the full band version of this. We’ve already begun to translate it into an official RtS song, and it’s already taken on a new form that is totally rad. Although this video has a very folk-y feel, the full band version is very dark and ominous…which in my mind equals great. Enjoy.

For those of you who read past the video and intro paragraph…I’ll fill you in on a secret. The overall mood and idea of the song was strangely inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s vampire Twilight saga. Yes, I am almost 29, and a man. But for whatever reason I found the dark themes of these books to be very compelling. Although the song isn’t necessarily about the books, I wrote this song while reading the first 3. That’s embarrassing. But true.

We have a song called “Future Listeners.” In short, the song is centered around the idea that many people (including myself) have strong opinions about the horrible course of the nation/war, but are too lazy to change said course (including myself), thusly making us no better than the people that we negatively critique. We’re a bunch of listeners, and not do’ers. And our complacency will unfortunately continue on like a broken record long into the future. Just kickin’ back and listening to Bob Dylan records doesn’t make us activists. By no means are we a political band, or freedom writers, the song was written purely based on observation.

With that said, since we don’t have a live video of this song, nor a good version recorded, I thought I would post an “acoustified” video of it. It’s got a different feel and groove to it, but have a listen anyway. Look out for a good “electrified” recording of it soon.

In a blatant attempt to copy the success of La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows, Rain the Shining (sans Jon unfortunately) decided to take the acoustic show on the road…er…on the trail. Equipped with nothing more than two acoustic guitars, a snare and two digital cameras, we braved the 90 degree/90% humidity day to venture into the woods of Columbia to play a couple RtS songs. Little did we know that every mosquito and ant in Maryland had three skinny musicians on their lunch menus. Somehow I made it out of this experience with only minor bug damage, but Mike and Jonny looked like two 10 year olds with chicken pox. Bless their souls. We had fun doing this, so be prepared for more musical adventures in the outback.

For the time being, enjoy “Celebrate” in the woods.
