Last week, completely out of the blue, we got a message from the Ottobar asking us if we were interested in playing a show on August 22nd. Of course I was SUPER excited because I love the Ottobar—not to mention the fact that’s it’s been a WHILE since we’ve last played. What makes this show even cooler is the fact that we’re playing with an amazing Smiths/Morrissey tribute band called Girlfriend in a Coma, which for us is great because we dig the Smiths and Morrissey, so it’s going to be a night of good times all around.
Here’s the info on the show: August 22nd (Friday), @ the Ottobar, All Ages, doors open @ 9pm!!!
We’re going on @ exactly 9:30pm, which gives everyone time to get out of work and head down to the Ottobar. We really hope we see a lot of friendly faces in the crowd. Check out the “SHOWS” section on the right for more. There’s a flier to promote the show, save it and print it out to hand out to your friends, famliy, co-workers, and even random people you run into.
Hey all this is Jon from the rippin’ RTS. This is my first time using a “blog,” so bare with me (hence the title). More posts to come…..
BRING IT
Let me start over. We all had a great practice…all the mates are watching every thing I type. We playing at the Ottobar next friday….Converge played there recently so I’m sure it will rip…and I digress. As I was being allowed to make a name/account for this I wished I could become the one and only Admin. If that happened this would be the three topics:
-PBR
-Suffocation and other great Relapse Record bands from the mid 90s
-Where is Burton C Bell and Fear Factory today?
Well have a good week all and look forward to seeing some of you killers at the gig.
In a blatant attempt to copy the success of La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows, Rain the Shining (sans Jon unfortunately) decided to take the acoustic show on the road…er…on the trail. Equipped with nothing more than two acoustic guitars, a snare and two digital cameras, we braved the 90 degree/90% humidity day to venture into the woods of Columbia to play a couple RtS songs. Little did we know that every mosquito and ant in Maryland had three skinny musicians on their lunch menus. Somehow I made it out of this experience with only minor bug damage, but Mike and Jonny looked like two 10 year olds with chicken pox. Bless their souls. We had fun doing this, so be prepared for more musical adventures in the outback.
For the time being, enjoy “Celebrate” in the woods.
Before we get to the good stuff, I’m guessing it’s the obligation of the band to welcome everyone to our new site. Yes, it’s a glorified blog. But, it makes sense for us. We haven’t played a show in quite some time, so we would be remiss in not having a site that makes it easy to explain why. In brief, we have been busy. Busy, writing, working, buying equipment to record our first full length album with (DID YOU JUST SAY?!?! Why yes, I did), and just fine-tuning our set. The purpose of this site is to hopefully provide an enjoyable forum to post new songs, videos, pictures of the band, and most importantly Read the rest of this entry »
Friends often ask me what Rain the Shining’s song writing process is. I guess there isn’t a simple answer other than we all piece the songs together during band practice. For a more in depth answer, read on.
Generally, I’ll start by having some type of chord and melody structure that I then use as a Madlibs style framework to hang my lyrics on. Once that part of the process is done, the pseudo-song is then put on an assembly line where factory workers, Mike (drums), Jonny (lead guitar) and Jon (bass) assess the product and consider their own parts. “From Point A,” a song that has taken on many forms over its 2 or more years in existence (excluding different outros), has proven itself as a fan favorite at our live shows. I can see why, too. Our songs have a tendency to drone the night away, but this one in particular has one of our more rockin’ moments…even if said moment isn’t until about 4 minutes into the song. Maybe it’s the 4 minutes of anticipation that makes its finish so sweet. With all of that said, I’ve decided to take the rock from From Point A, and post a video of the song in its purest, most original form…acoustic. Enjoy.
